Will you have a Cuter Husband if you Earn More?

This was one of the recent e-mails I received from Daily Worth.  I was intrigued by it because it fits so well to the Trophy Husband thoughts I’ve posted about here and here.  I’m curious what you think.

Higher Income, Cuter Husband?

OK, gals—besides a fatter 401k, here’s another benefit to boosting your income:

As a woman’s earning power grows, she is more likely to choose an older, more attractive mate, says a new study published in the journal Evolutionary Psychology this month.

“Previous research shows that men place greater importance on physical attractiveness when picking a partner, whereas women focus much more on whether someone can provide material resources,” says lead researcher Fhionna Moore, of Abertay Dundee University, in this interview on ScienceDaily.

That all changes as a woman’s wealth increases. Debunking the so-called cougar effect, researchers theorize that being financially independent gives women greater confidence in choosing a mate who is older, attractive and more powerful.

We have to ask: Does that shift reflect financial reality—i.e. higher income women don’t need to pick a mate for his income? Or does a sense of financial security lead women to make better choices?

So, what do you think?  Any truth to it?  Do you think you’d be more likely to marry a better looking man if you were financially independent?  By the way, Daily Worth is a free newsletter that discusses financial topics that specifically face women.

  1. Uh-oh, a few omens here for me on this one… Daria, you posted this on my birthday, my wife went back to work (making good money with her PhD.), I’m home with the kids, and she’s out at a school function. The search for the cuter hubby could be on. Ha!
