Empty Trunk – Week 5

Empty Trunk – Week 5

Things I did well:

  • Drank only water for 6 days.  Starting on Sunday.  (Did cheat on Friday)
  • Logged my calories.
  • Weighed in with Fat Secret.  It’s free and is not an affiliate link.  I just like it.
  • Stopped drinking soda.
  • Played Wii Fit.
  • Ate lots of apples.
  • Brought veggies, hummus and pita chips to a party for safe snacks.
  • Ate Active Lifestyle Oatmeal for breakfast most days – fills me up & only 170 calories.

  • Drank way too much wine Saturday night.
  • Ate anything I wanted Saturday and Sunday including Taco Bell and Grilled Cheese (not at the same time).
  • Ate at McDonald’s on Friday and had wine again, only two glasses though.
  • Exercise?  Smeshercize…

So, did it work?

  • Start – Dec. 20 – 70 lbs to lose
  • Week 1 – minus 0.5 = 69.5  lbs to lose
  • Week 2 – minus 2.0 = 67.5 lbs to lose
  • Week 3 – minus 0.0 = 67.5 lbs to lose
  • Week 4 – minus 2.0 = 65.5  lbs to lose
  • Week 5 – minus 0.5 = 65.0  lbs to lose
  • Total to date – minus 5.0

I would have totally understood gaining weight this week with the choices I made to insert real life into my new food choices.  I am intentionally not strangling myself with this weight loss goal because if I *diet* and really go all guns, then I’ll be great for about 6 weeks, but then quit.  I’ve been down this road before and it always works that way.  This is why not being completely strict, but trying to make the better choice most of the time is my plan.  That also means any loss will be very slow, but as long as it is steady and in the right direction, I am happy.  Eventually I will have lost the easy weight and will need to up the ante, but for now this works for me.

How did you do?

Here’s who has signed up for our #emptytrunk challenge.  How did they do this week?

Weekly Tip

Tip 1:  I logged in to fat secret again.  My last weigh in was March 2010 and I’ve gained 5 pounds since then.  Little do they know that I’ve lost 100 pounds and gained 105 in that time frame!  :)  Well, maybe not quite that much, but I have certainly fluctuated quite a bit in the past year.   I really like fat secret because it has such a huge database of foods that it is really easy to enter my food intake.  Plus, there is an app for my phone, so I always have access to log my food.  No excuses!   Here is a tracker they gave me that will automatically update when I log in…

By the way, should you want to try fat secret, you can modify your historical weight.  I was frustrated that it only showed a gain when I’ve been losing (albeit slowly) the past month.  I found out how to add those last few weights and now my graph is encouraging again!  Ask me if you want help with that.

Tip 2:  I really enjoy having lime in my water.  I tried lemon but it wasn’t as refreshing as lime and didn’t encourage me to drink more water.  The lime does though!

  1. Congrats on the .5 loss. I totally agree, I will not fall into the diet trap.
This week I worked out 3 days. May work out later this evening, not sure yet. I did snack on vanilla wafers this week & went out Thursday to get me & the kids some coldstone. I figure as long as I don’t buy it when I go to the grocery store & treat myself once a month.

I weighed myself yesterday & appear to be down by 2lbs. I’m just excited to keep up with my work out. Oh yeah! Last night I went to a Moms night Out & we did some pilates. That’s why I wasn’t so worried about working out this morning.

Tip: Don’t purchase icecream & snacks & grocery store. So, its not tempting but treat yourself to it atleast once a month.

    • Jennifer (Life with the Lebedas) highlighted a guest post last week of one of her readers that lost 50 pounds. She did it by never focusing on a weight number and instead setting physical goals. One of hers was to run a 1/2 marathon which she did… I think you are on the right track!

I like the idea of a GNO that includes exercise, what a great idea! :) And congrats on 2lbs, woohoo!

  2. Congrats on the 5.0 total weight loss! Well I still don’t know what I am doing wrong. My pedometer is increasing everyday, I even hit 2016 one day this week! However, I am not gaining. I weighed this morning and I did not gain and I did not lose, however, earlier in the week I had lost 2.4 but sometime later in the week I seemed to have gained it back. But, overall I have kept off .8 pounds total over 3 weeks, that really sucks. I should be in the 12 pound range at this point. OH and I have also managed to cut 400 MORE calories out of my diet. So at this point I am about ready to say to hell with it. I need serious motivation to keep that from happening.

    • Would you be comfortable joining fat secret? If you log your exercise and your food and *friend* me I can maybe give you some insights?

Either way, think about it this way (or at least I am). There are many days, weeks, and years that I gained weight to get me needing to lose 70lbs now. Each week that I don’t gain is a success and if I lose? Bonus! Whatever you are doing is an improvement over your past activities. You are going in the right direction!! If you track your activities and have a week of loss, then you can follow that same plan the next week. This is not easy. We all know that or we wouldn’t be in this spot to being with.

You are taking control of your life and your body – GO YOU!!

      • Daria,

I already use http://www.myfitnesspal.com to log all my daily foods and exercise. It is working for me, I just am frustrated over the NO weight loss. I have a friend who is doing the same thing I am started the SAME day I did and she has already lost 14 pounds, yea I am not happy. But I feel better, and my joints don’t hurt like thy used to so I guess that is something. Thanks for the words of encouragement.

        • It is frustrating! There is no doubt about it. It may only be that muscle weighs more and so although you aren’t seeing results on the scale, you are feeling them in your fitness and joints. That is a positive too! The weight will come… just stick with it – I know it’s hard when you see others being more successful, but we are all different – metabolisms, age, fitness level, etc. Use your friend as encouragement that it will work… maybe not in the same time as she, but in your body’s own time. It’s a struggle and it is hard work and it is frustrating, but stick with us! :) I can’t wait to celebrate with you when the tide turns and it starts falling off.

  3. Congrats on the continued “down-sizing” :o) I on the other hand TOTALLY fell of the wagon this week. Bud LIght LIme was a great friend – and although “light” evidently not light enough! lol

Anyhoo – it’s a new weekend and a new week. I did drink tons of water and wogged once…maybe next week :)

    Happy Weekend!!

    • I am completely on board with having off wagon weeks. This is figuring out how to maintain a healthy weight in real life and I have no intention of forgoing beer and wine for my lifetime! I have found my using wine as my reward for losing 5lbs to be motivating though. There have been plenty of times I’ve thought to pour a glass of wine and stopped because I haven’t met my goal. Granted I have quite a bit of weight to lose, but this goal setting with reward at the end is pretty helpful! Way to keep it real life Anje! Thank you for your twitter support during the week. :)

  4. Fast food is just so easy! It smells good, tastes good and is super cheap and convenient. Too bad our bodies have refused to adjust to it. lol – So frustrating. Eat healthy or else! At least you know what’s going and you are tracking it. That some days is the hardest part.

  5. Yea Daria! And good work on the water, I know how hard that was for you and you did it!

I am down 2.4 lbs this week! Yea! I worked really hard this week and was discourage quit a bit & would not have continued if it was not for my husband, David, who kept encouraging me. He is my biggest fan and I am so grateful that he believes in me.

    • WOOHOO! You got your 2lb week! Yay! I know that you have worked incredibly hard, getting up at 5am to work out to P90X? That is dedication. I am so happy that David has taken you on as his *hobby* and is being so supportive. What a recipe for success! You’ll get that last 20lbs in no time. Thanks for inviting Barb! I am excited how well staying accountable and having a target is working for everyone. I think we will all be successful.

  6. Ok, so I just joined this morning through Heather sharing on Facebook..Congrats to all who lost this week…I need to lose about 60lbs and today hubby and I are going to go and get fit for running sneakers have joined the gym down the street and waiting for the 1st of the month to start so even though we have tons of snow around and going toget another storm will be trying to work out in the house and hopng to make a gym in our basement.. • Welcome Barb! So glad to have you here and yes you commented just fine! I will send you an email each week inviting you to comment with your week’s progress and also to leave any tips that have worked for you. This is purely about encouragement and support and to stay accountable knowing that we will be reading your progress. If you haven’t signed up via email and facebook, please go ahead and do so. Then you’ll get any posts once a day. Each weight loss one is on Saturdays and is titled Empty Trunk. Can’t wait to see your success!

  7. Sorry I haven’t been good about posting on here. I’m down a total of 4 pounds over the three weeks that I’ve joined you. My goal is 5 more, so thanks for the encouragement.

I’ve been trying to walk three times a week, and I stopped (for the most part) buying Jalapeno Poppers. ;)

Keep up your great work! Thanks for the motivation.

    • Woohoo! That is great! Especially since you are still nursing and thinking about Baby #2, you don’t want to be too gung ho on weight loss, but 1lb+ a week is perfect! Congrats!

    • The pita chips are just in the Deli aisle at our grocery store. I can’t remember the brand, but there isn’t a huge selection. You can get them at Sunflower market or other natural food stores too. They are pretty good – but I don’t know if they are much better than chips as far as calories, etc. goes.

  8. This is an interesting article on staying motivated to lose weight (or to be more accurate, how to lose weight even when you are not motivated). http://www.slate.com/id/2281854/

I’m not if I’m posting this right – I’ve never posted on a blog before. :)

I’m down about 3 or 4 lbs. I’m not convinced yet that I’ve really lost this weight and it’s not just that I’m dehydrated or something. I think I have to hit 5 lbs to believe it. I find your reports very motivating!

    • Yay Laura! Congrats on the 4 pounds too, that is getting up there on *real* weight loss. :) I fluctuate about 2 to 3 pounds depending on time of day, salt intake etc.. That is one of the pros of weighing in on the same day each week – similar foods/activities, time of day – it tends to balance out. Granted I lost a pound the day after I weighed in! But, hey if it sticks then that is a pound for this week, right?

I am glad to hear my weekly updates are helpful! I am really comfortable with how I am going about this – no crazy diet, no OCD requirements – just easy does it – better choices and being conscious.
