I am all about encouraging my kids to have fun, but rather than learning how to use a machine gun to kill alien invaders, I prefer for them to have fun while learning something worthwhile at the same time.
For the past 6 weeks, my kids have been reviewing a gaming website that combines learning with fun. As you may have guessed by the title, that site is JumpStart. I really want you to hear the review from my kids’ perspective, so will add to this later this week with their words, but so far I’ve been really impressed and the kids only have great things to say.
How it works
The kids are able to create their avatar and then explore a variety of “worlds” playing games along the way. I was a little concerned that they were just games and not learning because the kids are enjoying them so much. In fact, my 9 year old and 6 year old are constantly trying to get on the computer first so they can play Jump Start! But they are learning things too.
Here is the official description from their site:
JumpStart is a magical online world packed with friends, games and adventures! From training dragons to exploring lost islands, JumpStart.com includes thousands of games and activities for kids ages 3-12. But what really sets JumpStart apart is our commitment to education. We believe that learning should be an adventure, not a chore. That’s why the games at JumpStart.com are specially designed to make math, reading and critical thinking fun! After all, there’s no stopping a kid with a JumpStart!

This weekend I peered over my 6 year old’s shoulder as he was playing and realized that he had to determine if a word was a noun or a verb in order to move his player forward in the particular world he was exploring. It fit right in with what he’s doing in class this week and he was doing in voluntarily.
They can hatch their personal dragon, blast off on a rocket into Math Blaster, play games on the boardwalk and any number of other seasonal activities and worlds that are constantly being updated.
