Empty the Trunk – Weight Loss & Exercise Success!

Empty the Trunk – Weight Loss & Exercise Success!

I DID IT!  I followed through on my promise to start a running program.  To know how big this is, you have to realize that I hate running.  I detest it.  I’d rather match socks than run – or mop my floors.  If you lived with me you’d understand the level of avoidance involved here.

But, I overcame that and I successfully completed Week 1 of the Couch to 5K running program.  Not only that, but I even tried my hand at riding Heelys!  Check out this post if you want a good laugh at my expense.

Week 1 Running Program

I absolutely love this running program because it tells me EXACTLY what to do.  It starts you out slow and then builds you up each week to be jogging more and more.    The first week include 3 days of exercise:

  • 5 minute walking warm-up
  • 20 minutes of alternating 60 seconds of jogging with 90 seconds of walking
  • 5 minute walking cool down

I can’t say it was a pretty site – all that jiggling, bouncing, wheezing, sweat, laughing at the motions of my shadow… but I huffed and puffed my way through all 3 days and even went again this morning!

To help keep me on track, I downloaded the free app onto my phone.  You can find it by searching Couchto5K.  There are a couple of paid versions – $2 and $3 – and I may end up downloading one of those, but wanted to see if I liked the program before I spent money on a running app.

Pros:

  • Buzz every time there is a transition to a different activity
  • I can hear the buzz over my ipod if I keep the music at a decent level.
  • Clock countdown to the next activity.

Cons:

  • The pause button doesn’t work like I think it should.
  • App seems to close easily which puts you back to the beginning.

Couch to 5K Running ProgramFamily Exercise

Like I said last week, my kids said they wanted to run with me, but that was before we’d gone even one step.  I was fairly certain their interest would disappear once they realized it was more work than fun.  But they surprised me, and have run with me 3 out of 4 times now.  Not just one or two – but all three have come along.

It’s quite a fiasco to see my 3 year old on her little bike pedaling madly, my 9 year old racing far ahead showing off, my 7 year old tagging behind to help his little sister down steep parts (she doesn’t get the back brake yet) and pushing her up hill when we encounter those.

Then, of course, there is me.  A middle aged overweight woman in a tank top and spandex jiggling her way down the block is always such an appealing sight.  Sorry neighbors!

So beyond the blinding my neighbors running, did I accomplish anything?

Weight Loss

  • I lost 0.8 lbs.
  • Total weight loss = -0.4 pounds.
  • First goal = Lose 10 pounds (9.6 to go)

Not anything to write home about – but it’s DOWN.  Finally, going in the right direction.

Goals for this Week

My goals for this week include:

  • Continue Couch to 5K 3 days this week
  • lose weight
  • Measure myself so I can track inches lost

So, far I haven’t won the 10 week fitness challenge, but it is definitely motivating and we have 4 winners already! Winners for Week 5 and 6 will be posted next week.  I forgot to draw Week 5’s so am going to announce them together.

  1. That’s wonderful, Daria! I have to say, I’ve trained for an have run 2 – 1/2 marathons now (my third will be next year) and I STILL don’t enjoy running. But I do it (sometimes) because it feels so good afterward. Keep up the great work!!

    • lol – that gives me hope Jenny! Seriously, I am so glad to hear that you can dislike it and still be successful. Was supposed to run (very loose definition of the word) yesterday, but am going to go today instead – as long as I fit 2 more days in this week I’m still on track…
