3 Fun Halloween Recipes with an Avocado – Spookamole!

Halloween is one of my favorite holidays.  What’s not to like?  The basic focus of the day is to be silly and have fun – no pressure to find the perfect gift, no travel required, you get to dress up and not be committed to an insane asylum, and the food is so darn cute!

When I was challenged by Avocados from Mexico and Mom Central to come up with a “spooky” recipe using avocados I jumped at the chance.  First of all, I love avocados and top all my Mexican recipes with them.   But even better – they taste good AND are good for you with all that healthy fat.  Yes, healthy fat seems like an oxymoron, but avocados meet all the criteria for the American Heart Health Associations heart healthy diet guidelines.

Best of all Avocados from Mexico is giving $1,000 to the best Spookamole recipe and $250 each to 4 other contestants!  I’m hoping you’ll help me figure out which one (of the 3 below) I should enter into the contest.

Halloween Recipes with Avocado

My friend Brent and I got creative and came up with 3 Spookamole creations:

  • Pirate Ship
  • Spider
  • AlienAvocado halloween recipePirate Ship Recipe
  • 1/2 avocado (peeled)
  • Pretzel stick for mast
  • raisins for cannons (or olives)
  • Pita chip for flag (use cheese from the pretzel stick package to stick the raisin/olive and pita chip)

Spider Recipe

  • 1/2 avocado (peeled)
  • pretzel sticks for legs
  • raisins for eyes (or substitute olives)

  • 1/2 avocado (peeled)
  • grape tomato (halved for eyes)
  • raisins or olives for eyes
  • Use avocado peel/or bell pepper for mouth and mohawk (mohawk also small slice of avocado for 3D effect)
  • pretzel sticks for antennae
  • Use toothpicks to hold the eyes and mohawk in place

My youngest LOVED the treats.  I had a hard time getting her to sit still long enough for this picture and she even asked for a second “ship”!  I tried them too and the combination of pretzels, pita chips and raisins was surprisingly tasty.

I wouldn’t have thought of using avocados for Halloween treats until this challenge, but now I think they are great.  Plus, they are available all year so next I’m thinking Christmas tree treats, Easter Egg designs, Green Eggs for Dr. Seuss Day…

For now though I want to enter the Avocados from Mexico Spookamole contest.  I could definitely use $1,000!

Which design do you think I should enter? Please leave a comment and let me know your favorite.

Do you have a great avocado recipe?  You can enter your recipe for a chance to win too!

By the way – avocados are only $0.50 this week at Sunflower Market (through Wednesday, Sept 28th) and here is a Coupon to make them even more affordable (buy 3 get one free).

**I wrote this review while participating in a Spookamole blog tour by Mom Central Consulting on behalf of Avocados from Mexico and received avocado items to facilitate my review and a promotional item to thank me for taking the time to participate.

  1. since you can’t eat an avocado peel, why not use a pepper as the mouth on the face? or really, any type of vegetable can be cut into a mouth shape. Hair for the face can be made edible with cheese shavings, that you can shave yourself.

raisins with avocado is not the best tasting combination. why not use black olives? radishes, anything.

  2. The pirate ship is cute, but the spider is my choice for your Halloween entry. I do think I’d go with black olive eyes. Why not add almond slivers on its back for a little creepy texture? Good luck!
