My family and I went to see the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey, Fully Charged circus last night.
To say it was an amazing show is an understatement. My kids are ages 9, 7 and 3 and they were engaged and entertained for 4 straight hours with nary a fidget from any of them. Four straight hours without a whine, without an I’m bored, without asking to buy toys because they didn’t want to miss a minute of the show? Amazing. They were entranced from start to finish.
Full Access Pre-Show
We’ve been to the circus before, but I’ve never taken advantage of the pre-show that is included with the price of your ticket. It was such a great experience! We started out with a tour of where the animals are kept.
- Where do they get their tigers? (individuals in FL and CA who raise them from bottles)
- What happens when an animal retires? (they are given to large cat sanctuaries or the Ringling Bros. Elephant Sanctuary) etc.
We even got to touch an elephant tooth!
After touring the animal pens, we were able to go on the floor of the Coliseum and directly interact with the performers. T and I were selected to stand in a line while the jugglers whirled their juggling sticks between themselves coming within inches of our faces. I could even feel the breeze as they passed!
J really, really wanted to be chosen to be one of the kids in the acts and finally the clowns took pity on her and brought her out to participate (she’s on the far right holding the juggling thing-ama-jigs).
Fully Charged Show
The performance itself was full of all the classic animal acts – elephants, tigers, horses… The universal favorite of the kids I asked – Tasmin 10, Reagan 4, Chloe 3 – were the tigers. Even before we saw the tigers perform, they were the favorite – followed closely by the elephants.
The animals were impressive, but my favorite part was the acrobatics – especially the highwire act.
We were sitting right below the highwire/tightrope act and the view was amazing! The star performer was so engaging – you could just feel how much fun he was having up there. An infectious grin shared with the audience, boisterous shouts, ear to ear smile when a trick was performed well. I heard a girl behind me keep saying “That’s like impossible, mom!”. I have to admit I agree with her. Jumping from the shoulders of one person to the shoulders of another while they are on the highwire? Yep, impossible. But they did it anyway.
It was a late night (show let out around 9:30) and the Coliseum was pretty hot when we first sat down (I suggest wearing layers with a tank top as the bottom layer) – but the night was an absolute success and fabulous experience.
How do I know my kids liked it for sure?
They were literally on the edges of their seats for the entire 2 1/2 hour show.
